About Bushfire Awareness Experience
The warmer months in Australia have seen our country set ablaze, making fire awareness and safety an important part of the experience of growing up in Australia. More relevant than ever before, this interactive and hands-on excursion will have your students exploring areas directly affected by real bushfires and experiencing firsthand the impact fire has on native Australian flora and fauna. On a special bush walk, they’ll examine and describe the characteristics of places and environments, and as they learn about fire management they’ll compare and contrast influences on the management of places and environments, including the Indigenous Australian approach to bushfires. Students will conduct their own geological tests and explore bio-indicators through fishing and bug catching activities, making direct comparisons to fire and non-fire affected areas. They’ll acquire, process and communicate geographical information using geographical tools for inquiry, with a specific focus on bushfire impacts. As they examine a bushfire-prone area, students will observe how environments have adapted to fire. They will explore the impact bushfires have on Australian people, places and environments and investigate ways people can reduce the impact of bushfires in the future. As they learn how people live in fire-prone areas, and how people and environments influence one another, they’ll explain the interactions and connections between people, places and environments, and investigate how we can reduce the impact of fires. Students will have the opportunity to dress up in genuine Rural Fire Service, State Emergency Service and NSW Fire and Rescue Service PPE, and discuss how they manage backburning, hazard reductions and natural fire disasters. This informative excursion will have your students engaged and immersed in the topic of bushfires, which has become so prevalent to all Australians.

Activities
Introduction: Students will enjoy an interactive introductory presentation on fire safety, dressing up as Fire Fighters and discussing their roles and how fires affect Australians.
Activity 1: Macro Invertebrate Fishing in Fire Affected area (Bola Creek) – Students will use dip nets on long-handled poles to catch water-dwelling critters and examine the different species which live in the local environment. They’ll take samples and catch bugs from different areas, and use scientific tools and equipment to determine whether an environment is healthy or unhealthy
Activity 2: Bush Walk – Students will be taken on a bushwalk through the incredible surrounding bushland, exploring the unique features of this scenic area. They’ll get to explore our native bushland and be able to get up close and personal with the flora and fauna that can be found at this level, learning how movements can be observed in nature, for example with wind.
Activity 3: Mini Beast Bug Catching in Pristine vs Bushfire Affected ecosystems – Students will have faces camouflaged in child friendly face paint. Students will be given small clear jars with lid to catch anything creepy crawly they find – -spiders not allowed. This activity shows students biological diversity of environments and what can live in habitats. This activity also focuses on how animals have adapted to live within our cities and built up urban areas and how humans need to create green spaces for our animals. Students will be able to identify what they have caught as they cross reference their bug to the identification sheets provided.
