Have you ever seen 1000 ping bongs balls explode high into the air with a bang? Strap yourself in because this interactive virtual science excursion will have your students excitedly engaged in amazing STEM activities as they cheer, shout and laugh with joy. Through the power of technology, students will be transported from their schools, bedrooms and living rooms as they embark on an exciting and exclusive virtual experience behind the scenes of the Ranger Jamie Warehouse. Your enthusiastic Ranger will perform a series of adrenalin pumping experiments to showcase the effect of HEAT on the properties and behaviour of materials! Watch as our professional Rangers turn water into ice instantly using liquid nitrogen! See the delight on your students faces as we launch chemical and air pressure rockets, create lava lamps, explode water balloons and defy the law of gravity as we launch 1000 ping pong balls high into the air – all while learning about heat and the varying states of matter! Students will investigate the different properties of solids, liquids, gases, plasma and non-Newtonian fluids and discover what happens when combining and separating certain mixtures. Students will also learn about the scientific method as they identify and observe what a hypothesis is and learn to understand how humans use this knowledge to their advantage when creating new and improved technology. Unique, engaging and action-packed, this fun and memorable program will have your students feeling like professional scientists!

Time allocation for excursions can be tailored and adjusted to suit your individual school timetable and scheduling.

  • What is the result of combining materials?

Describing and exploring specific forces

Students:

  • explore and describe some common contact or non-contact forces, for example:
    • applied force (eg pushing, kicking)
    • friction and air resistance
    • tension and elastic force
    • gravity
    • magnetism
    • buoyancy
  • perform a scientific investigation to explore the effects of changing the strength of a single contact or non-contact force, for example:
    • how a stronger or weaker applied force, such as a push or kick, results in objects travelling longer or shorter distances
    • how increasing or decreasing the strength of the force of air resistance by changing the shape of an object results in increases or decreases in speed

Transfer and transformation of energy

Students:

  • identify different types of energy transformations, for example: (ACSSU097)
    • gravitational energy to energy of movement

Activities

Students, Teachers and Rangers will all join the Zoom session at the allocated time.

  • The virtual excursion kicks off with a meet and greet with one of our enthusiastic Ranger Jamie guides reporting LIVE from behind the scenes in the Ranger Jamie Warehouse!
  • This is followed by an exciting and engaging science presentation where students identify different contact forces such as friction and air pressure and non-contact forces such magnetism and gravity and explore what makes a force stronger or weaker. Students will also learn about the scientific method as they identify and observe what a hypothesis is and learn to understand how humans use this knowledge to their advantage when creating new and improved technology.
  • Live teacher + student interaction with Ranger Jamie.
  • Activities include:
    • 1000 ping pong ball explosion
    • Chemical and air pressure rocket experiment
    • Turning liquid to ice instantly
    • Rocket fuel explosion
    • Mystery matter slime workshop

Special Note

Teachers will be required to moderate the zoom. We recommend that Teachers open a live chat for students to interact with our Rangers by typing comments, reactions and questions. The teacher can then pass on any student questions to the Ranger for them to answer!
