About

Want to experience first-hand the power of FORCES? Strap yourself in because this program starts with a huge EXPLOSION using liquid nitrogen and over 1000 ping pong balls launching into the air! This interactive virtual science excursion will have your students excitedly engaged in amazing STEM activities as they cheer, shout and laugh with joy. Through the power of technology, students will be transported from their schools, bedrooms and living rooms as they embark on an exciting and exclusive virtual experience behind the scenes of the Ranger Jamie Warehouse. Your enthusiastic Ranger will perform a series of adrenalin pumping experiments such as releasing rocket fuel explosions, turning liquid nitrogen to ice, launching air pressure rockets, exploding water balloons, defying the law of friction, gravity and air pressure and ending with a huge EXPLOSION using liquid nitrogen and over 1000 ping pong balls launching into the air – all while learning about gravity, air pressure, magnetism and everything in between! Students will observe first-hand how contact forces affect the behaviour of objects and develop their understanding of the ways in which energy is used as a resource. Students will also learn about the scientific method as they identify and observe what a hypothesis is and learn to understand how humans use this knowledge to their advantage when creating new and improved technology. Unique, engaging and action-packed, this fun and memorable program will have your students feeling like professional scientists!

Syllabus Outcomes Addressed

  • ST2-9PW-ST describes how contact and non-contact forces affect an object’s motion
  • ST2-1WS-S questions, plans and conducts scientific investigations
  • ST2-2DP-T selects and uses materials, tools and equipment to develop solutions for a need or opportunity

Time Frame

45min Virtual Excursion - Anytime of your choice

Time allocation for excursions can be tailored and adjusted to suit your individual school timetable and scheduling.

Syllabus Content Focus

Key Inquiry Questions:

  • How can objects affect other objects with or without touching them?
  • How can we use forces and energy in a product or system?

Contact and non-contact forces:

Students:

  • identify that both pushes and pulls can be classified as contact and non-contact forces (ACSSU076)
  • observe how contact and non-contact forces cause changes in the motion of objects, for example: (ACSSU076)
  • changes in speed
  • changes in direction

Forces and energy in products and systems
Students:

  • investigate how forces and materials interact in a product or system to perform a function (ACTDEK011)

Activities

Students, Teachers and Rangers will all join the Zoom session at the allocated time.

  • The virtual excursion kicks off with a meet and greet with one of our enthusiastic Ranger Jamie guides reporting LIVE from behind the scenes in the Ranger Jamie Warehouse!
  • This is followed by an exciting and engaging science presentation where students identify the different kinds of forces such as air pressure, magnetism, gravity and friction and identify and observe that both push and pull forces can be classified as contact and non-contact and how this changes the motion of objects as well as its function. Students will also learn about the scientific method as they identify and observe what a hypothesis is and learn to understand how humans use this knowledge to their advantage when creating new and improved technology.
  • Live teacher + student interaction with Ranger Jamie.
  • Activities include:
    • 1000 ping pong ball explosion
    • Chemical and air pressure rocket experiment
    • Turning liquid to ice instantly
    • Rocket fuel explosion
    • Mystery matter slime workshop
    • Exploding bag challenge
    • Lava lamp experiment

Special Note

Teachers will be required to moderate the zoom. We recommend that Teachers open a live chat for students to interact with our Rangers by typing comments, reactions and questions. The teacher can then pass on any student questions to the Ranger for them to answer!
