About

On this unique case study excursion, students have the rare opportunity to explore the isolated town of Bundeena. With one road in and out and only a handful of essential shops and facilities, this secluded coastal town is a rare, close knit community with an abundance of natural beauty. Surrounded by pristine bushland and miles away from any major metropolitan city, this perfect paradise is an ideal case study for your students to explore ‘Place and Liveability’. On this enchanting excursion, students will identify factors that influence people’s perceptions of the liveability of places and investigate the unique features and characteristics of Bundeena as a place of community.

Students will actively engage in hands-on fieldwork throughout this ‘Place and Liveability’ experience. They will use an array of geographical tools such as maps, graphs, statistics, images, first and secondary resources to unpack the physical features and community of Bundeena, examining its livability, history and local identity.

Time allocation for excursions can be tailored and adjusted to suit your individual school timetable and scheduling.

Transport

Leave it all with us! Whilst you are welcome to organise your own transport to and from our adventures, alternatively you can book with our Ranger Jamie buses or coaches. Ask us for a transport quote and we can take care of everything!

Please note, all coaches include seatbelts for students however, buses do not.

Students:

  • investigate the influence of accessibility to services and facilities on the liveability of places, for example: (ACHGK044)
    • identification of services and facilities considered important to people’s wellbeing
    • examination of variations in access to services and facilities between urban, rural and remote places
    • explanation of how limited access to services and facilities affects the liveability of ONE place for different groups of people eg young people, people with disabilities, the aged, rural and remote communities

Environmental quality
Students:

  • investigate the impact of environmental quality on the liveability of places, for example: (ACHGK045)
    • discussion of factors that reduce environmental quality eg natural hazard, conflict, population pressures, land degradation
    • comparison of the impact of environmental quality on the liveability of places across a range of scales eg local neighbourhoods, large cities, countries

Community
Students:

  • investigate the influence of social connectedness and community identity on the liveability of places, for example: (ACHGK046)
    • identification of the characteristics of places that influence community identity eg culture, environment, public events, religious beliefs
    • discussion of factors that enhance social connectedness eg transport, technology, open spaces, meeting places, employment

Enhancing liveability
Students:

  • investigate strategies used to enhance the liveability of places using examples from different countries, for example: (ACHGK047)
    • identification of the characteristics of places considered highly liveable
    • examination of a range of strategies used to enhance liveability
    • assessment of the role of governments, non-government organisations, communities and individuals in enhancing liveability
    • proposal of strategies to improve the liveability of a place in Australia

Arrival / Morning Tea / Toilet Break – Berenice Forster Park (Next to Bundeena Ferry Wharf)

Introductory Presentation
10am – 10:30am
The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers before enjoying an interactive and engaging presentation at Berenice Forster Park. Teachers to distribute work booklets to students (approx. 15 minutes)
Activity
10:35am – 12pm
Students participate on guided walk exploring the township of Bundeena
12pm – 12:25pm
Lunch / Toilet Break

12:25pm – 1:15pm
Students are guided through Bundeena and walk to Bonnie Vale campground.
Activity
1:15pm – 1:40pm
Students study Bonnie Vale picnic area/ campground and its influence on Bundeena township.
1:45pm – 2pm
Wrap Up / Conclusion / Toilet Break at Bonnie Vale

A student activity booklet is written and provided by Ranger Jamie Tours. A PDF version of this booklet will be made available to you upon your booking confirmation, for you to distribute in soft and/or hard copy to your students depending on your preference.
