About

Discover the diverse features and characteristics of places and environments in an intimate virtual excursion with our amazing Rangers! Through the power of technology, students will be transported from their schools, bedrooms and living rooms into the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney’s CBD as they embark on an exciting and exclusive virtual adventure. Led by our experienced Rangers, students will be taken on a fully guided tour to experience the stunning beauty of the Royal Botanic Gardens. Through virtual, place-based learning, students will learn about the importance of protecting places, the need to preserve our natural environment, and how the unique features of different places can support a variety of flora and fauna. Students will learn about the importance of green spaces such as botanical gardens in urban areas. They’ll also investigate the ways that people influence places for example, exploring who organises and manages places green spaces and how these measures help to contribute to sustainability and protection of our natural environment. Every student will be engaged and enthusiastically involved in this fun and memorable program.

Time allocation for excursions can be tailored and adjusted to suit your individual school timetable and scheduling.

Factors that change environments
Students:

  • investigate the ways people change the natural environment in Australia and another country, for example: (ACHGK026, ACHGK027)
    • examination of how people, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, have influenced each country’s environmental characteristics eg land clearing

Environments shape places
Students:

  • investigate how the natural environment influences people and places, for example: (ACHGK028)
    • discussion of how climate influences the distribution of where people live
    • comparison of how landforms influence where and how people live in Australia and another country

Humans shape places
Students:

  • investigate how people influence places, for example:(ACHGK029)
    • description of who organises and manages places eg local and state governments
    • identification of ways people influence places and contribute to sustainability eg roads and services, building development applications, local sustainability initiatives
    • examination of a local planning issue; the different views about it and a possible action in response to it

Activities

Students, Teachers and Rangers will all join the Zoom session at the allocated time.

  • The virtual excursion kicks off with a meet and greet with one of our enthusiastic Ranger Jamie guides reporting LIVE from The Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney CBD. This is followed by an exciting introductory presentation to showcase the local area!
  • Live teacher + student interaction with Ranger Jamie.
  • Fully guided tour through the Royal Botanic Gardens overlooking Sydney Harbour and the Opera House. Students will be taken on a virtual bushwalk through the incredible gardens, exploring the unique features of this scenic area. They’ll get to explore this beautiful green space and be able to get up close and personal with the flora and fauna that can be found at this level, learning how this area is both unique and similar to other environments where people and animals live. They'll also learn about the importance of green spaces such as botanical gardens in urban areas.

Special Note

Teachers will be required to moderate the zoom. We recommend that Teachers open a live chat for students to interact with our Rangers by typing comments, reactions and questions. The teacher can then pass on any student questions to the Ranger for them to answer!
