With Stanwell Tops as a backdrop, this area is fantastic for discussing erosion and impact it can have on our environment as students observe the exposed cliff and discuss how erosion on coastal headlands can lead to undercutting of cliffs and steep slopes. After an introduction, recess and toilet break, students jump back on the bus and head down to Stanwell Park Beach Reserve for some hands-on fieldwork. With a stunning bushwalk, dip-net fishing and beach erosion activity, students will have ample time to apply their knowledge of erosion and weathering in a meaningful and unforgettable excursion experience. Students will revel in this super fun-day and remember it for months to come!

Activities

Introduction: The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers at Bald Hill. This is followed by an interactive and engaging presentation. Here we have a beautiful view of the stunning escarpment at Stanwell Tops. This area is great for discussing erosion and impact it can have on our environment as students observe the exposed cliff and discuss how erosion on coastal headlands can lead to undercutting of cliffs and steep slopes.

Students will then jump back on the bus and travel down to Stanwell Park Beach Reserve for x3 interactive activities.

Activity 1: Bush Loop Walk – Exploring Erosion at Stanwell Park Students will embark on a guided bush walk through the stunning Stanwell Park Beach Reserve, surrounded by the dramatic escarpment and vulnerable sand dunes. Along the way, they will explore the unique coastal environment and identify key areas affected by erosion, such as the dunes and escarpment base. Students will learn about the natural processes contributing to erosion in this area and discuss strategies for managing and reducing human impact to help preserve this beautiful and fragile environment. This activity combines observation, education, and appreciation of Stanwell Park’s unique ecosystem.

Activity 2: Beach Erosion Water Activity: In this activity, students will learn about coastal erosion—the process of losing coastal lands due to the removal of sediments or bedrock from the shoreline. They will discuss how beaches, dunes, and sand cliffs are particularly vulnerable to erosion. To explore this concept, students will build model sand mountains, reinforce them with sticks to simulate vegetation or structural support, and pour water over them to observe the effects of erosion. They’ll investigate how foliage and other natural features can help strengthen and protect coastal areas, making the learning both fun and interactive.

Activity 3: Dip Netting (Fishing) along an eroded River System: Students will use dip-nets to catch water-dwelling critters and examine the different species that inhabit the local environment. They’ll take samples and catch bugs from various areas, using scientific tools and equipment to assess whether the environment is healthy or unhealthy. Students will also observe and discuss the erosion that has occurred along the edge of the creek, examining how it impacts the habitat and the species living in the stream. They will consider ways erosion can be managed and mitigated to improve environmental health. Additionally, students will reflect on how erosion affects fishing in the river system, as sediment and habitat loss can influence fish populations and the availability of resources for aquatic life.
