About

On this fun and educational day, students will explore the amazing features of places and discover why they are special to people and living things. Students will investigate the unique environments at the Hunter Valley Gardens, including beautifully designed gardens, lush landscapes, and fascinating sculptures and waterfalls. They’ll examine both natural and human-made features and learn how people create, care for, and connect with special places.

Through engaging, hands-on activities, students will use tools like magnifying glasses and maps to investigate and describe the different features of the gardens. They will observe how people enjoy and look after this beautiful place, gaining an appreciation for the role we all play in protecting special environments.

As they explore the award-winning Hunter Valley Gardens, students will marvel at the themed gardens inspired by cultures around the world, with thousands of trees, shrubs, and flowers, as well as stunning statues and murals. This day outdoors will leave them inspired and excited to learn more about the features of places and how we can care for them in Australia and beyond.

Introductory Presentation The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers followed by an interactive and engaging presentation.

Grouping: Students are divided into their groups of approximately x 30-35 students and are allocated a Ranger guide for each activity.
Activity 1 Students participate in each activity for approximately 30 minutes.
Activity 2 Students participate in each activity for approximately 30 minutes.

Activities

Gardens Exploration Walk: Explore the unique features of different places on an engaging guided walk through the Sunken Garden, Chinese Moongate Garden, Indian Garden, and Rose Garden. students will identify and compare the features of each garden, exploring how they are shaped by both natural elements and human creativity. This hands-on activity encourages curiosity about the features of places and helps students appreciate the diverse ways people interact with and value their environment.

Scavenger Hunt Exploration Walk: Embark on an exciting scavenger hunt, where students will search for key natural features that highlight the park’s unique geographical and ecological characteristics. This interactive activity encourages teamwork, critical thinking, and hands-on learning, helping students connect with nature and deepen their understanding of geographical concepts in a fun and engaging way.

Habitat Making: Students work together in small teams to create an animal home for possums, wombats, wallabies and the other animals which live in this environment. Students will have their creative side sparked in this activity. Each group will be given a large array of sticks, bark, leaves and branches to make specific animal homes. This activity focuses on the destructive human influence on environments and why we must protect habitats for different species. Students work together in groups and their creative side will be sparked as they create an elaborate animal dwelling/ habitat.

Bug Catching: Students will have faces camouflaged in child-friendly face paint. Students will be given small clear jars with lid to catch anything creepy crawly they find – spiders not allowed. This activity shows students the biological diversity of environments and what can live in habitats. This activity also focuses on how animals have adapted to live within our cities and built-up urban areas and how humans need to create green spaces for our animals. Students will be able to identify what they have caught as they cross reference their bug to the identification sheets provided.
