About
This immersive and engaging excursion at Hunter Valley Gardens will provide your students with a unique opportunity to explore the themes of commemorations, celebrations, and remembrance. As they journey through the stunning gardens, students will discover the significance of cultural and historical events that have shaped communities over time.
They’ll delve into the origins of various celebrations and commemorations from around the world, exploring how these traditions have evolved and what they reveal about the cultures that created them.

Activities
Guided Walk 1: Oriental Gardens: Students complete a guided walk through the serene and picturesque Oriental Garden, a space deeply inspired by Japanese and Korean design principles. As we stroll through the garden, we’ll delve into the rich traditions of Japanese and Korean cultures, uncovering the significance of their customs, symbols, beliefs, and festivals. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on the importance of cultural exchange, consider the role of commemorations in fostering unity, and discuss how traditions from diverse backgrounds contribute to the shared sense of remembrance and celebration within Australian society.
Guided Walk 2: Chinese Moongate + Indian Mosiac Gardens: Students complete a guided walk through two enchanting spaces—the Chinese Moongate Garden and the Indian Mosaic Gardens. In the Chinese Moongate Garden, we’ll pass through the traditional Moon Gate, flanked by imposing bronze Temple Guardians. Continuing to the Indian Mosaic Gardens, we’ll enter through 200-year-old antique gates guarded by bronze elephants. Students will gain insights into how the customs, beliefs, and traditions of Chinese and Indian communities have shaped Australia’s multicultural identity. Through discussion and reflection, we’ll explore the shared importance of commemorations, celebrations, and remembrance in fostering connection and understanding across diverse cultures.
Calligraphy writing & Origami Making: Students will delve into the ancient practice of calligraphy, learn the basics of this traditional art form and try their hand emulating this practice. Students will then engage in the Japanese art of paper folding. This hands-on experience promises a creative outlet whilst fostering patience and fine motor skills. Students will be able to craft paper cranes, which in Eastern Asian culture, these birds symbolise hope and good fortune. This activity offers a unique blend of cultural exploration and artistic expression, providing students with a memorable and enriching experience.
Chinese Dragon Art & Crafts: The dragon dance is often performed during Chinese New Year. Chinese dragons are a symbol of China’s culture, and they are believed to bring good luck to people, therefore the longer the dragon is in the dance, the more luck it will bring to the community. The dragons are believed to possess qualities that include great power, dignity, fertility, wisdom and auspiciousness. In this activity, students will create their own unique dragon heads and participate in a dragon-dancing activity.

On arrival, there is a dedicated drop off zone in front of the main entrance, with coach parking just to the right.
