Explore the stunning Hunter Valley Gardens on an engaging excursion that delves into the factors that shape places. Students will wander along walking paths through 14 hectares of breathtaking gardens, featuring over 6,000 trees, 600,000 shrubs, and more than a million ground cover plants. Built by a team of dedicated landscape gardeners, architects, and engineers, the gardens showcase how people have transformed this natural space into a masterpiece of design and biodiversity.

Through themed gardens inspired by different regions of the world, students will learn how human creativity, cultural influences, and environmental conditions have shaped these places. This immersive experience highlights how natural and human elements interact, demonstrating the impact of early land use and modern management. Students will explore the role of sustainability and consider the connections between people, places, and environments, gaining insights into how we can shape and preserve the world around us.

Introductory Presentation The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers followed by an interactive and engaging presentation.

Grouping: Students are divided into their groups of approximately x 30-35 students and are allocated a Ranger guide for each activity.
Activity 1 Students participate in each activity for approximately 30 minutes.
Activity 2 Students participate in each activity for approximately 30 minutes.
Lunch / Toilet Break

Activities

Guided Walk 1: Take a guided walk through the Sunken Garden, Chinese Moongate Garden, Indian Garden, and Rose Garden to explore the factors that shape places and the interactions between people and their environments. Throughout the walk, students will investigate the natural, cultural, and human factors that shape each garden, discussing the role of climate, heritage, design, and individual choices. They’ll consider how these factors come together to create places that are valued for their beauty, functionality, and connection to culture and environment.

Guided Walk 2: Join us on a guided walk through the Italian Garden, Oriental Garden, Ladies Walk, and Border Garden to explore the various factors that shape places and understand the dynamic interaction between people and their environments. Throughout the walk, students will analyse the interaction of natural, cultural, and human factors in shaping these gardens. They’ll investigate how places are designed to reflect their cultural significance, meet environmental conditions, and fulfill the needs and values of the people who use and care for them.

Habitat Making: Students work together in small teams to create an animal home for possums, wombats, wallabies and the other animals which live in this environment. Students will have their creative side sparked in this activity. Each group will be given a large array of sticks, bark, leaves and branches to make specific animal homes. This activity focuses on the destructive human influence on environments and why we must protect habitats for different species. Students work together in groups and their creative side will be sparked as they create an elaborate animal dwelling/ habitat.

Bug Catching: Students will have faces camouflaged in child-friendly face paint. Students will be given small clear jars with lid to catch anything creepy crawly they find – spiders not allowed. This activity shows students the biological diversity of environments and what can live in habitats. This activity also focuses on how animals have adapted to live within our cities and built-up urban areas and how humans need to create green spaces for our animals. Students will be able to identify what they have caught as they cross reference their bug to the identification sheets provided.

On arrival, there is a dedicated drop off zone in front of the main entrance, with coach parking just to the right.
