Guided by our passionate educators, your students will embark on our inspiring tour, examining the intricate relationship between the built environment and nature. Through hands-on fieldwork, they will conduct quadrat surveys in intertidal zones, investigating the impacts of human activity on local ecosystems. This immersive experience empowers students to design innovative, eco-friendly solutions for coastal management, inspiring them to take action in minimising human impact.

Armed with essential geographical tools—such as quadrats, maps, and temperature gauges—students will engage in interactive activities that spark curiosity and deepen understanding. This program aligns seamlessly with the syllabus, transforming students into advocates for sustainability and stewards of the environment.

Introductory Presentation
10:25am – 10:45am
Participants will receive an overview of the day and engage in a mapping activity in their booklets to familiarise themselves with Kurnell Beach and it’s history.
Students split into groyps of 30-35 students to rotate through activities
Activity
10:45am – 11:35am
Sand Dune Transect: In this activity, students will conduct a sand dune transect, examining vegetation and soil to understand the impacts of environmental change.
Activity
11:35am – 12:25pm
Crab Catching: Students will explore the intertidal zone in an exciting crab-catching activity, learning about local marine life and its ecological significance.
12:25pm – 12:55pm
Students will take a break for lunch, allowing time to relax and recharge.
Activity
12:55pm – 1:45pm
Kurnell Walk: During this coastal walk, students will explore the area’s historical and ecological significance, focusing on human impacts and management strategies.
1:45pm – 2pm
Students will regroup to share their experiences and key learnings before preparing for their return trip on the bus.

Crab Catching: Crab catching provides an engaging, hands-on opportunity for your students to explore marine ecosystems, helping them understand the impact of human activities on local species. This activity aligns with the syllabus by fostering skills in data collection and analysis as students learn to assess the health of crab populations and their habitats.

Sand Dune Transect: The sand dune transect activity directly relates to the syllabus by allowing students to investigate coastal ecosystems and the effects of environmental change on biodiversity. By analysing vegetation patterns and soil characteristics, students develop a deeper understanding of sustainable management practices necessary for preserving these fragile environments.

Kurnell Walk: The Kurnell Walk immerses your students in the area’s natural and historical significance, highlighting how human activities have shaped the landscape over the past 50 years. Students will examine management strategies in response to environmental changes, such as the airport’s construction, evaluating the balance between development AND conservation.
