Activities

Introduction: The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers t Bald Hill. This is followed by an interactive and engaging presentation. Here we have a beautiful view of the stunning escarpment at Stanwell Tops. This area is great for discussing erosion and impact it can have on our environment as students observe the exposed cliff and discuss how erosion on coastal headlands can lead to undercutting of cliffs and steep slopes.

Activity 1: Bush Loop Walk: Students are taken on a beautiful Bush Walk where they explore Stanwell Park Beach Reserve and its beautiful coastal environment. Students are shown the main areas that are impacted by erosion and learn about ways to manage and reduce our impact on this beautiful environment.

Activity 2: Beach Erosion Water Activity: In this activity we observe and speak about coastal erosion. Coastal erosion is the loss of coastal lands due to the net removal of sediments or bedrock from the shoreline. We discuss how the most vulnerable coasts are those that are made up of beaches, dunes and sand cliffs. We explore these concepts in a fun and interactive beach activity.

Activity 3: Dip Netting (Fishing) in a freshwater stream: Students will use dip-nets on long-handled poles to catch water-dwelling critters and examine the different species which live in the local environment. They’ll take samples and catch bugs from different areas and use scientific tools and equipment to determine whether an environment is healthy or unhealthy. They’ll also observe and discuss the erosion that has occurred along the edge of the creek and ways that this can be managed and mitigated to improve the health of the environment.
