Walk in the footsteps and learn the tales of real colonial settlers as your students dive deep into the secret laneways, buildings and historical sites of The Rocks in an intimate virtual excursion with our amazing Rangers! Through the power of technology, students will be transported from their schools, bedrooms and living rooms to the streets The Rocks in Sydney’s CBD as they embark on an exciting and exclusive virtual adventure. Led by our experienced Rangers, students will put themselves in the shoes of the European explorers who first set foot on Australia’s shores and discover why these explorers travelled such great distances. Students will learn about the lives of real people from Australia’s colonial past, discover how Australian society changed throughout the twentieth century and examine the everyday life of a variety of men and women who lived in post-1800 colonial settlements. Jam packed with extensive history, fun facts and games this memorable excursion delivers a fresh new way to understand and interpret Australia’s history which will have your students eagerly learning, participating and excitedly hanging off every word! This experience is sure to deepen students understanding and empathy for the struggles, challenges and triumphs that have made Sydney the great city it is today.

Time allocation for excursions can be tailored and adjusted to suit your individual school timetable and scheduling.

Syllabus Content Focus

Key Inquiry Questions:

  • Why did the great journeys of exploration occur?
  • Why did Europeans settle in Australia?
  • What was the nature and consequence of contact between Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples and early traders, explorers and settlers?

Stories of the First Fleet, including reasons for the journey, who travelled to Australia, and their experiences following arrival (ACHHK079)
Students:

  • identify reasons for the voyage of the First Fleet and explain why various groups were passengers
  • describe the establishment of the British colony at Port Jackson
  • using a range of sources, investigate the everyday life of ONE of the following who sailed on the First Fleet and lived in the early colony: a soldier, convict, ex-convict, official

Activities

Students, Teachers and Rangers will all join the Zoom session at the allocated time.

  • The virtual excursion kicks off with a meet and greet with one of our enthusiastic Ranger Jamie guides reporting LIVE from The Rocks, Sydney CBD. This is followed by an exciting introductory presentation to showcase the local area!
  • Live teacher + student interaction with Ranger Jamie.
  • Fully guided tour through The Rocks in Sydney’s CBD overlooking Sydney Harbour and the Opera House. While on our history excursions, students will have the opportunity to participate in experiential learning as they are taken through secret laneways, buildings and historical sites.

Special Note

Teachers will be required to moderate the zoom. We recommend that Teachers open a live chat for students to interact with our Rangers by typing comments, reactions and questions. The teacher can then pass on any student questions to the Ranger for them to answer!
