About

Explore the features and characteristics of different places and environments in an intimate virtual excursion with our amazing Rangers! Through the power of technology, students will be transported from their schools, bedrooms and living rooms into the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney’s CBD as they embark on an exciting and exclusive virtual adventure. Led by our experienced Rangers, students will be taken on a fully guided tour to experience the stunning beauty of the Royal Botanic Gardens. Through virtual, place-based learning, students will examine the characteristics of the location they are in, observing the bushland, coastline and greenspaces, and have the opportunity to consider how people’s perceptions of places are the basis for actions to protect places and environments – all while having fun! Every student will be engaged and enthusiastically involved in this fun and memorable program.

Time Frame

Time allocation for excursions can be tailored and adjusted to suit your individual school timetable and scheduling.

Syllabus Content Focus

Key Inquiry Questions:

  • How and why are places similar and different?
  • What would it be like to live in a neighbouring country?
  • How do people’s perceptions about places influence their views about the protection of places?

The Australian continent
Students:

  • investigate Australia’s major natural and human features for example: (ACHGK014, ACHGK015)
  • description of natural features of Australia eg deserts, rivers, mountains

Climate of places
Students:

  • investigate the climates and weather of different places (ACHGK017)

Similarities and differences between places
Students:

  • investigate the settlement patterns and demographic characteristics of places and the lives of the people who live there, for example: (ACHGK019)
  • examination of the varying settlement patterns and demographics of places

Perception and protection of places
Students:

  • investigate how the protection of places is influenced by people’s perception of places, for example: (ACHGK018)
  • description of how and why people perceive places differently
  • discussion of how people’s perceptions influence the protection of places in Australia e.g., national parks, world heritage sites

Activities

Students, Teachers and Rangers will all join the Zoom session at the allocated time.

  • The virtual excursion kicks off with a meet and greet with one of our enthusiastic Ranger Jamie guides reporting LIVE from The Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney CBD. This is followed by an exciting introductory presentation to showcase the local area!
  • Live teacher + student interaction with Ranger Jamie.
  • Fully guided tour through the Royal Botanic Gardens overlooking Sydney Harbour and the Opera House. Students will be taken on a virtual bushwalk through the incredible gardens, exploring the unique features of this scenic area. They’ll get to explore this beautiful green space and be able to get up close and personal with the flora and fauna that can be found at this level, learning how this area is both unique and similar to other environments where people and animals live. They'll also learn about the importance of green spaces such as botanical gardens in urban areas.

Special Note

Teachers will be required to moderate the zoom. We recommend that Teachers open a live chat for students to interact with our Rangers by typing comments, reactions and questions. The teacher can then pass on any student questions to the Ranger for them to answer!
