Join us for an exciting adventure in the stunning coastal town of Bundeena, where your students will dive into the fascinating world of places and livability! This immersive program will engage them in hands-on activities, comparing the unique charm of small-town Bundeena with the beautiful Bonnie Vale.

Your students will explore essential aspects of liveability, from community services and environmental quality to recreational facilities and safety. Through engaging surveys, interactive mapping, and water quality testing, they’ll collect and analyse primary data that brings geography to life. Get ready for an unforgettable day of discovery, learning, and connection to our vibrant local communities!

Syllabus Content Focus

Students investigate factors influencing perceptions of the liveability of places, for example

  • examination of environmental factors that influence perceptions of liveability. For example, climate, landforms, natural resources
  • discussion of human factors that influence perceptions of liveability. For example, culture, incomes, employment, crime and safety
  • explanation of ways used to measure, assess or rank the liveability of places. For example, surveys, liveability index
  • development of personal liveability criteria and application to a local place.

Students investigate the influence of accessibility to services and facilities on the liveability of places, for example

  • identification of services and facilities considered important to people’s wellbeing
  • examination of variations in access to services and facilities between urban, rural and remote places.

Students investigate the impact of environmental quality on the liveability of places, for example

  • discussion of factors that reduce environmental quality. For example, natural hazards, conflict, population pressures, land degradation.

Students investigate the influence of social connectedness and community identity on the liveability of places, for example (ACHGK046)

  • identification of the characteristics of places that influence community identity. For example, culture, environment, public events, religious beliefs
  • discussion of factors that enhance social connectedness. For example, transport, technology, open spaces, meeting places, employment.

Students investigate strategies used to enhance the liveability of places using examples from different countries, for example

  • identification of the characteristics of places considered highly liveable
  • examination of a range of strategies used to enhance liveability
  • assessment of the roles of governments, non-government organisations, communities and individuals in enhancing liveability
  • proposal of strategies to improve the liveability of a place in Australia.

Day Outline

Arrival / Morning Tea / Toilet Break
10:00am – 10:25am Kick off the day with morning tea and an energetic introduction from our enthusiastic Rangers!
10:30am – 10:50am Students will split into small groups for an intimate introduction, during which they will answer key questions in their booklets to prepare for the day’s activities.
10:30am – 11:15am Students will embark on an engaging liveability rating survey and map exploration of Bundeena!
11:15am – 11:50am Dive into hands-on learning as students conduct water pH testing to assess local waterways!
11:50am – 12:05pm Enjoy a quick transfer to Bonnie Vale Camp Grounds
12:05pm – 12:35pm  Refuel with a lunch break amidst the beautiful surroundings of Bonnie Vale.
12:35pm – 1:15pm Explore the liveability of Bonnie Vale on a bush walk while conducting another engaging survey!
1:15pm – 1:50pm Conduct water pH testing at Bonnie Vale to compare with findings from Bundeena.
Wrap up the day with a reflection session, sharing insights and comparisons from the adventure!

Activities

Liveability Rating Survey and Map Exploration: Students will begin their day in Bundeena by evaluating liveability through a survey that assesses aspects like access to services, healthcare, and recreational facilities. Using maps, they will explore local services and infrastructure.

Water Quality pH Testing: Students will conduct water quality pH tests in Bundeena, observing the health of local waterways and recording any litter found, connecting their findings to the broader ecosystem.

Comparison at Bonnie Vale: Afterward, students will travel to Bonnie Vale to repeat the liveability survey and water quality testing. They’ll analyse the differences between the two locations, enhancing their understanding of geography and community dynamics.
