Discover the vibrant coastal town of Kiama with our engaging Places and Livability excursion at Kiama Harbour! This hands-on program offers students a unique opportunity to explore the relationship between urban environments and livability while connecting with key Stage 4 Geography concepts. Students will participate in exciting activities, including hand reel fishing, pH testing, and surveying, all designed to enhance their understanding of how natural resources and urban planning shape the quality of life in a coastal community.

As they navigate the stunning harbour and its surroundings, students will learn about the importance of biodiversity, sustainability, and effective urban management. This excursion provides real-world applications of classroom knowledge whilst also fostering critical thinking and environmental stewardship. Syllabus Content Focus

Students investigate factors influencing perceptions of the liveability of places, for example

  • examination of environmental factors that influence perceptions of liveability. For example, climate, landforms, natural resources
  • discussion of human factors that influence perceptions of liveability. For example, culture, incomes, employment, crime and safety
  • explanation of ways used to measure, assess or rank the liveability of places. For example, surveys, liveability index
  • development of personal liveability criteria and application to a local place.

Students investigate the influence of accessibility to services and facilities on the liveability of places, for example

  • identification of services and facilities considered important to people’s wellbeing
  • examination of variations in access to services and facilities between urban, rural and remote places.

Students investigate the impact of environmental quality on the liveability of places, for example

  • discussion of factors that reduce environmental quality. For example, natural hazards, conflict, population pressures, land degradation.

Students investigate the influence of social connectedness and community identity on the liveability of places, for example (ACHGK046)

  • identification of the characteristics of places that influence community identity. For example, culture, environment, public events, religious beliefs
  • discussion of factors that enhance social connectedness. For example, transport, technology, open spaces, meeting places, employment.

Students investigate strategies used to enhance the liveability of places using examples from different countries, for example

  • identification of the characteristics of places considered highly liveable
  • examination of a range of strategies used to enhance liveability
  • assessment of the roles of governments, non-government organisations, communities and individuals in enhancing liveability
  • proposal of strategies to improve the liveability of a place in Australia.

Day Outline

Arrival / Morning Tea / Toilet Break
10:00am – 10:30am Students will enjoy morning tea while engaging in a meet-and-greet session with fellow classmates and teachers, fostering a friendly and collaborative atmosphere.
10:30am – 10:50am Students will split into small groups for an intimate introduction, during which they will answer key questions in their booklets to prepare for the day’s activities.
10:50am – 11:25am Activity 1
11:25am – 12:00pm Activity 2
12:00pm – 12:30pm Lunchtime! Students can relax and refuel for the remainder of the day.
12:30pm – 1:00pm  Activity 3
1:00pm – 1:30pm Activity 4
1:30pm – 1:45pm Wrap up and conclusion session, where students can reflect on their experiences and share insights.
Depart for home on the buses, taking with them valuable knowledge and memories from their day at Kiama Harbour.

Activities

Hand Reel- Fishing: Experience firsthand the recreational activities that contribute to the local economy and community engagement. This activity ties into the concept of livability by highlighting how access to natural resources enhances quality of life in coastal towns.

pH Testing: Students will analyse water samples from the harbour to assess environmental health and its impact on marine ecosystems. This hands-on experience fosters an understanding of sustainability and the importance of maintaining water quality for the community’s well-being.

Pollution/ Livability Survey: Students will conduct a pollution and livability survey, evaluating local areas for environmental challenges and public amenities. This activity encourages critical thinking about urban planning and how pollution affects the overall livability of coastal towns like Kiama.

Blowhole and Urban Livability Mapping: As students explore the iconic Kiama Blowhole, they will participate in urban livability mapping, identifying key features that enhance the community’s appeal, such as public spaces and tourist attractions. This activity emphasises the connection between urban design, natural attractions, and the area’s livability.
