Students:

- analysis of spatial variations in Australia’s water resources eg groundwater, rivers
- explanation of variations in freshwater water availability across Australia eg precipitation, groundwater, runoff
- assessment of variations in freshwater water availability between continents
Water scarcity & water management
Students:
- investigate the nature of water scarcity and ways of overcoming it, for example: (ACHGK040)
- description of the nature, extent and causes of water scarcity in different countries
- assessment of strategies used to overcome water scarcity and the role of governments, non-government organisations, individuals and communities in sustainable water management
- proposal of individual actions contributing to water management
The value of water
Students:
- investigate the economic, cultural, spiritual and aesthetic values of water for people, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and/or peoples of the Asia region, for example: (ACHGK041)
- description of the ways water is used by people eg agricultural, commercial, industrial and recreational uses
- comparison of the importance of water to ONE Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community and/or ONE Asian community

Our enthusiastic rangers provide a brief overview of Manly Dam’s significance and its role in the local ecosystem. |
Students split up into groups of approximately 30 and alternate the following activities: | |
Activity 10:40am – 11:30am |
Students engage in a hands-on activity to measure pH, turbidity, and oxygen levels in the dam water. |
Activity 11:30am – 12:10pm |
Students explore the beautiful surroundings while observing and discussing local flora and fauna. |
12:10pm – 12:45pm A break for students to enjoy their packed lunches and recharge for the afternoon activities. (approx. 25 minutes) |

Activity 12:45pm – 1:35pm |
Students use maps, compasses, and GPS devices to navigate the area and learn practical geography skills. |
1:40pm – 1:50pm | Students gather to reflect on the day’s activities and share key takeaways about water conservation. |
1:50pm – 2pm 2pm Students board the bus, ready to head back to school with newfound knowledge and experiences. |

Activities
Water Quality Test: Students will energise their curiosity as they test the pH levels of various water sources at Manly Dam, comparing their water quality and exploring its impact on ecosystems and human health.
Scenic Dam Walk: A captivating guided nature walk will immerse students in the stunning scenery of Manly Dam, where they’ll uncover fascinating natural water catchments and landforms while answering key questions in their booklets.
Geographic Tools Survey: Equipped with fieldwork tools, students will conduct surveys to discover how human activities influence water and shape the surrounding environment, unlocking insights about their local ecosystem.
