About
Immerse students in an authentic Aboriginal art experience, exploring how social, historical and cultural factors shape identity and expression. Led by our Gumaraa Rangers, this workshop builds a deeper understanding of the evolving nature of Aboriginal culture.
Option 1: Individual Artworks
Students create meaningful artworks under the guidance of our Indigenous artist, exploring how art communicates identity, history, and connection to Country, and how cultural expression changes over time.
Option 2: Mural Consultation & Artwork
Collaborate with our Indigenous artist to design and paint a large-scale mural for your school. Students examine the cultural importance of collaborative art and contribute to a piece that celebrates identity, community, and storytelling.
Syllabus Outcomes Addressed
AST5-1 describes the factors that contribute to an Aboriginal person’s identity
AST5-2 explains ways in which Aboriginal Peoples maintain identity
AST5-3 describes the dynamic nature of Aboriginal cultures
AST5-4 explains adaptations in, and the changing nature of, Aboriginal cultural expression across time and location
AST5-5 explains the importance of families and communities to Aboriginal Peoples
AST5-7 assesses the significance of the roles of Aboriginal Peoples locally, regionally, nationally and internationally
AST5-9 analyses the factors that influence non-Aboriginal peoples’ range of perceptions of Aboriginal Peoples and cultures
Arrive/Depart
Full Day Excursion (4 Hours) 10am – 2pm
Time allocation for excursions can be tailored and adjusted to suit your individual school timetable and scheduling.

Syllabus Content Focus
Individual identity
Students:
- investigate factors that contribute to a person’s personal, cultural and national identity, for example:
- age, gender and ability
- family and community(ies)
- cultures, customs and languages
- spiritual and/or religious affiliation
- national icons
Cultural expressions & interpretations
Students:
- explore the diversity of Aboriginal Peoples’ and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ identities and cultures, and the factors that determine cultural expressions and interpretations in Aboriginal communities, for example:
- geographical location
- histories
- environments
- technologies
Social factors
Students:
- identify the social factors and experiences that have affected Aboriginal identities in post-invasion Australian society, for example:
- disconnection of families, including separation of children and the Stolen Generations
- draw conclusions about the effects of social factors and experiences on the development of Aboriginal identity in post-invasion Australian society, including:
- connection with Country
- imposed use of English and dispossession of Aboriginal languages
Spiritual identity
Students:
- identify the importance and interrelationship of Country/Place and spiritual identity to Aboriginal Peoples and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
- explore a wide range of expressions of spiritual identities through cultural activities, including Dreaming stories
- describe a variety of ways in which Aboriginal Peoples express their connection to Country
Family structures
Students:
- identify key features of kinship structures in Aboriginal cultures
- identify key features of family structures in Torres Strait Islander cultures, eg extended families, customary adoption practices
- describe the role and importance of kinship in Aboriginal communities today
- examine the factors that contribute to diversity within Aboriginal family structures today

| Introductory Presentation | The day kicks off with a meet and greet with the enthusiastic Gumaraa rangers before enjoying an interactive and engaging presentation. (approx. 25 minutes) |
| Grouping: Students are divided into their groups of approximately x 30 students and are allocated a Gumaraa ranger for each activity. | |
| Activity 1 | Students participate in each activity for approximately 30 minutes. |
| Activity 2 | Students participate in each activity for approximately 30 minutes. |
| Lunch / Toilet Break (approx. 25 minutes) |

Activities
For each excursion booking, the Gumaraa rangers will carefully select 4 of the following activities for your students to enjoy on the day. These activities are subject to the excursion location.
- Students will enjoy an interactive introductory presentation, where students will examine Aboriginal artefacts
- Smoking and Ochre Ceremony
- Bush Tucker/ Medicine Walk
- String making
- Deadly Games – learn more specific information about Aboriginal Culture
- Dreaming stories
- Boomerang throwing
