Bush Fire Awareness

Stage 3
HSIE Excursion

Step Into Australia’s Bushland!

Get ready for an action-packed day outdoors, all about caring for our planet and exploring global strategies that protect our changing world! In the heart of the National Park, you’ll kick off your adventure at Audley before heading to Bola Creek, or spend the whole day exploring the stunning coastline at Wattamolla.

Along the way, students discover the important roles different groups, communities, and agencies play when environmental change occurs, and how we can all take action to protect the places we love.

10:00 am – 2:00 pm (4 hours)

Your day begins at your chosen location, where students learn about the different roles agencies play during bushfires. With costumes and props on display, a few lucky students even get to dress up and step into these roles themselves!

Students are then divided into groups of approximately 35, each led by a Ranger. Groups rotate through the activities below, with each session running for around 45  minutes.

Audley-Bola

After your introduction and bathroom break at Audley, you’ll travel to Bola Creek for rotating activities, including:

  • Macroinvertebrate Fishing in a fire-affected area using dip nets;
  • Adventure Bush Walk through the rainforest and creek zones;
  • Mini-Beast Bug Catching comparing pristine vs. bushfire-affected ecosystems.

Wattamolla Program

At beautiful Wattamolla, students rotate through:

  • Mini-Beast Bug Catching in contrasting ecosystems;
  • Adventure Bush Walk exploring coastal bushland;
  • Macroinvertebrate Fishing (Bola Creek) using dip nets;
  • Beach Habitat Protection Challenge, a hands-on teamwork task.

HS3-ACH-01 describes Aboriginal Knowledges and Practices that care for Country and the importance of Aboriginal Languages revival;
HS3-GEO-01 examines global citizenship and how people organise, protect, and sustainably use the environment, using geographical information.
