About

Let us shed a new light onto electricity and energy in this exciting and action-packed learning experience! The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers followed by an engaging science presentation which culminates in a huge EXPLOSION using liquid nitrogen to launch over 1000 ping pong balls into the air! In this engaging fast-paced incursion, students investigate how electrical energy can control movement with a range of STEM-based activities and challenges. They observe energy transformations taking place in front of their eyes as we demonstrate how electrical energy can be transferred and transformed in electrical circuits and show examples of light, sound and heat transformations. Our interactive introductory presentation will challenge them to plan and conduct their own scientific investigations, and by the end of the day they’ll be able to communicate their conclusions to their peers. In just two hours, your students will make their very own electrical circuits, solar ovens and wind turbines, using our materials, tools and equipment to develop solutions. Working within teams in competitive games, students will be eagerly participating and enthusiastically motivated as they investigate and discover first-hand how electricity can be used in a product while designing, testing and evaluating their own designs. Let us spark student interest in this fun and memorable session where you won’t even have to leave the school grounds!

Syllabus Content Focus

Key inquiry questions answered

  • What types of energy transformations can be observed?
  • How can electricity be used in a product or system?

Transfer and transformation of energy
Students:

  • identify different types of energy transformations, for example: (ACSSU097)
    • gravitational energy to energy of movement
    • heat energy to light energy
  • investigate how electrical energy can be transferred and transformed in electrical circuits and can be generated from a range of sources (ACSSU097)

Forces and energy in products and systems
Students:

  • describe examples where light, sound, heat and electrical energy transform from one type of energy to another
  • investigate how electrical energy can control movement, sound, or light in a product or system (ACTDEK020)
  • design, test and evaluate a product or system that involves an energy transformation to meet an identified need using electrical energy

Day Outline

Rangers arrive at your school for approx. 1hr before your incursion is scheduled to start.
Introductory Presentation The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers followed by an interactive and engaging presentation.
(approx. 30-40 minutes)
Grouping: Students are divided into two groups. Students are allocated a Ranger guide for each activity. Each activity is on a rotational basis.
Activity 1 Students participate in each activity for approximately 40 minutes.
Activity 2 Students participate in each activity for approximately 40 minutes.

Activities

Introduction: The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers followed by an interactive and engaging science presentation, culminating in a huge EXPLOSION using liquid nitrogen to launch over 1000 ping pong balls into the air! This introduction focuses on electricity, how all circuits must be complete, how humans use electricity in our everyday life and how electricity energy can be transferred and transformed in electrical circuits. We also explore types of energy such as heat energy, geothermal energy, and light energy. Students will be engaged with this interactive presentation through a display of experiments. Selected students will be invited up to dress in real science uniforms such as lab coats, goggles and gloves whilst we explore the everyday role of scientists and their importance in our community.
Note: In school hall or a large COLA area preferred.

Activity 1: Making Solar Ovens – Students in teams will be given various pieces of equipment and instructed to design their own solar oven to meet a need. This STEM-based learning activity will have your students working together against the clock to construct the hottest oven using only solar energy. This activity will explore your students’ creativity and problem-solving skills. A great deal of fun for everyone.
Note: This activity can be run anywhere incl. inside a classroom, hall, cola or playground area. Students will just need a sunny, protected spot to place their ovens at the conclusion of the activity to ensure that they can test their ovens.

Activity 2: Making Electric Windmills – Students will be put into pairs and tasked with converting natural wind energy to electricity. In this activity students will learn about complete circuits and the need for renewable energy. At the conclusion of this activity students will have a complete independently working electric circuit.
Note: This activity can be run anywhere incl. inside a classroom, hall, cola or playground area.
