Let us shed a new light onto electricity and energy in this exciting and action packed learning experience! In this engaging fast-paced incursion, students investigate how electrical energy can control movement with a range of STEM based activities and challenges. In just two hours, your students will make their very own electrical circuits, solar ovens AND wind turbines! Working within teams in competitive games, students will be eagerly participating and enthusiastically motivated as they investigate and discover first-hand how electricity can be used in a product while observing different types of energy transformations. Let us spark student interest in this fun and memorable session where you won’t even have to leave the front gate!

Transfer and transformation of energy
Students:

  • identify different types of energy transformations, for example: (ACSSU097)
    • gravitational energy to energy of movement
    • heat energy to light energy
  • investigate how electrical energy can be transferred and transformed in electrical circuits and can be generated from a range of sources (ACSSU097)

Forces and energy in products and systems
Students:

  • describe examples where light, sound, heat and electrical energy transform from one type of energy to another
  • investigate how electrical energy can control movement, sound, or light in a product or system (ACTDEK020)
  • design, test and evaluate a product or system that involves an energy transformation to meet an identified need using electrical energy

Day Outline

Rangers arrive at your school for approx. 1hr before your incursion is scheduled to start.
Incursion duration= 2hrs
Introductory Presentation The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers before enjoying an interactive and engaging presentation.
(approx. 30-40 minutes)
Grouping: Students are divided into two groups. Students are allocated a Ranger guide for each activity. Each activity is on a rotational basis.
Activity 1 Students participate in each activity for approximately 40 minutes.
Activity 2 Students participate in each activity for approximately 40 minutes.

Activities

INTRODUCTION: (In Hall)
The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers before enjoying an interactive and engaging presentation. This introduction focuses on electricity, how all circuits must be complete, how humans use electricity in our everyday life and how electricity energy can be transferred and transformed in electrical circuits. We also explore types of energy such as heat energy, geothermal energy and light energy. Students will be engaged with this interactive presentation through a display of experiments. The presentation ends on a BANG with the explosion of 1000 ping pong balls in a metal drum (heat energy) and with an explosion of rocket fuel (heat and light energy). Selected students will be invited up to dress in real science uniforms such as lab coats, goggles and gloves whilst we explore the everyday role of scientists and their importance in our community.

ACTIVITY 1: Making Solar Ovens (Focus on heat energy transfer)
Students in teams are given various pieces of equipment. They are told what the end result must be however, they are not told how to successfully complete the task. This STEM based learning activity will have your students working together in groups against the clock to construct the HOTTEST oven using only solar energy. This activity will explore your students’ creativity and problem-solving skills. A great deal of fun for everyone.

ACTIVITY 2: Making Electric Windmills (Focus on electrical energy transfer)
Students in pairs will convert natural wind energy to an identified human need= electricity. In this activity students will learn about complete circuits and the need for renewable energy. At the conclusion of this activity students will have a fully independent working electric circuit. Putting this circuit together themselves they will understand what is involved and the importance of electrical energy.
