About
Set in Australia’s most famous and iconic harbours, this hands-on and action-packed excursion is the perfect location to explore the scale of human-induced environmental change and challenging sustainability. Having completely transformed over the last 200 years, the contrasting built and natural environments of Sydney Cove make for an ideal case study for students.

Arrive/Depart
Full Day Excursion (4 Hours) 10am – 2pm
Time allocation for excursions can be tailored and adjusted to suit your individual school timetable and scheduling.

Students:
- investigate the role and importance of natural environments, for example:
- identification of the function of natural environments in supporting life eg maintaining biodiversity
Environmental change
Students:
- investigate human-induced environmental changes across a range of scales, for example: (ACHGK070)
- brief examination of types, and extent, of environmental change
Environmental management
Students:
- investigate environmental management, including various world views and the management approaches of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, for example: (ACHGK071, ACHGK072)
- discussion of varying environmental management approaches and perspectives
Day Outline
Arrival / Morning Tea / Toilet Break (approx. 20 minutes) |

Introductory Presentation | The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers followed by an interactive and engaging presentation. (approx. 25 minutes) |
10.45am | Students will be picked at Circular Quay by Captain Cook Cruises at 10:45 sharp. |
10:45 – 11:45am | Students will be given a 1 hour tour of Sydney Harbour with a Ranger Jamie Tour staff member giving a fun and interactive tour over the ships microphone. |
11:45am | Students will be dropped at Chowder Bay/Clifton Gardens Reserve. |
10:45am – 12:45pm | Students will participate in syllabus related activities at Clifton Gardens Reserve, guided by a Ranger Jamie Tour staff member. Opportunity to go to the bathroom included in this time. |
12:45pm | Students will board back on the Captain Cook Cruise. |
12:45 – 1:15pm | Students will then be given a 30 minute tour around Sydney Harbour. Students will have the opportunity to eat their lunch at this point. |
1:15pm | Students will be dropped off at Man O’War Steps wharf next to the Opera House . |
Wrap Up / Conclusion / Toilet Break/Walk to Buses (approx. 45 minutes) |
Activities
Booklet Activities include: A student activity booklet is written and provided by Ranger Jamie Tours. A PDF version of this booklet will be made available to you upon your booking confirmation, for you to distribute in soft and/or hard copy to your students depending on your preference.
Booklet content will have students:
- Investigate the role and importance of natural environments and their function
- Examine first-hand human alterations and environmental effects to ecosystems through
- Discuss Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander management as well as European management strategies
- Observe and examine first-hand structural designs of environmentally friendly architecture
- Students will discuss the cause and consequence of change in environments through first and secondary resources
- Making field sketches/ transect graphs
- Using an anemometer and temperature gauges
- Analysing photographs
- Map reading
- Interpreting graphs and statistics
- Visual representations
- Spatial technologies
- Mind maps
