About
During this action-packed excursion, students will marvel at the breathtaking views of Norah Head’s rugged cliffs and sparkling waters while learning about the fascinating processes of erosion that shape landscapes. They will investigate the types and causes of erosion, examine human activities that exacerbate these processes, and discuss strategies to mitigate their impacts on landforms and ecosystems.
Syllabus Outcomes Addressed

Activities
Introduction: The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers at Norah Head. This is followed by an interactive and engaging presentation set against the backdrop of Norah Head’s breathtaking coastal scenery. This stunning location provides an ideal setting to explore and discuss the effects of erosion on headlands and beaches. Students will delve into the processes of cliff undercutting, the formation of steep slopes, and the intricate relationship between weathering, erosion, and the surrounding environment. With Norah Head’s dramatic landscape as their classroom, students will gain a deeper understanding of the forces shaping our coastline.
Activity 1: Guided Walk – Exploring Norah Head: Students will experience firsthand the striking effects of erosion on the dynamic landscape of Norah Head. As they explore this stunning coastal headland, they’ll observe dramatic rock formations, undercut cliffs, and clear evidence of weathering that has shaped the area over time. This immersive guided walk will showcase how natural forces—such as wind, water, and wave action—contribute to the erosion of coastal landscapes, creating steep slopes and unique geological features. Along the way, students will enjoy breathtaking views of Norah Head’s iconic lighthouse, pristine beaches and rockpools, all while gaining a deeper understanding of the processes that shape our coastlines.
Activity 2: Beach Erosion Water Activity: In this activity, students will learn about coastal erosion—the process of losing coastal lands due to the removal of sediments or bedrock from the shoreline. They will discuss how beaches, dunes, and sand cliffs are particularly vulnerable to erosion. To explore this concept, students will build model sand mountains, reinforce them with sticks to simulate vegetation or structural support, and pour water over them to observe the effects of erosion. They’ll investigate how foliage and other natural features can help strengthen and protect coastal areas, making the learning both fun and interactive.
Activity 3: Rockpool Survey: During this engaging activity, students will explore how wave action and weathering shape the rock pools, creating unique habitats for marine life. Through hands-on surveys and aquatic macroinvertebrate collection, students will investigate the health and diversity of marine organisms living in these ecosystems. Through this activity, participants will gain practical insights into the relationship between erosion, habitat formation, and the delicate balance of coastal ecosystems. This immersive experience provides a deeper understanding of erosion’s role in shaping the coastline while connecting students to the intricate and fascinating world of marine environments.
