Activities

Introduction: The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers at Robertson Park, Watsons Bay. This is followed by an interactive and engaging presentation. With the iconic coastal scenery of Watsons Bay as a backdrop, this location provides an ideal setting to observe and discuss the effects of erosion on headlands and beaches. Students will discuss the undercutting of cliffs, the formation of steep slopes, and the intricate relationship between weathering, erosion, and the surrounding environment.

Activity 1: Guided Walk – Exploring The Gap: In this activity, students will experience firsthand the striking effects of erosion on the landscape. As they explore this iconic coastal headland, they’ll observe the dramatic rock formations, undercut cliffs, and evidence of weathering that have shaped the area over time. This immersive activity highlights how wind, water, and wave action contribute to the erosion of coastal landscapes, creating steep slopes and unique geological features. With breathtaking coastal views as a backdrop, this engaging bush walk will deepen students’ understanding of erosion and its profound impact on our natural world.

Activity 2: Beach Erosion Water Activity: In this activity, students will learn about coastal erosion—the process of losing coastal lands due to the removal of sediments or bedrock from the shoreline. They will discuss how beaches, dunes, and sand cliffs are particularly vulnerable to erosion. To explore this concept, students will build model sand mountains, reinforce them with sticks to simulate vegetation or structural support, and pour water over them to observe the effects of erosion. They’ll investigate how foliage and other natural features can help strengthen and protect coastal areas, making the learning both fun and interactive.

Activity 3: Rockpool Survey: During this engaging activity, students will explore how wave action and weathering shape the rock pools, creating unique habitats for marine life. Through hands-on surveys and aquatic macroinvertebrate collection, students will investigate the health and diversity of marine organisms living in these ecosystems. Through this activity, participants will gain practical insights into the relationship between erosion, habitat formation, and the delicate balance of coastal ecosystems. This immersive experience provides a deeper understanding of erosion’s role in shaping the coastline while connecting students to the intricate and fascinating world of marine environments.
