About

On this action-packed incursion, students will engage with the power of forces as they participate in a series of scientific experiments and investigations. They’ll be challenged to describe and interact with different contact and non-contact forces, including push and pull forces. They can observe how forces affect the motion of objects in our interactive presentation, which culminates in a huge EXPLOSION that uses liquid nitrogen to launch over 1000 ping pong balls into the air! From friction to gravity, air pressure to magnetism and everything in between, your students will learn about forces in the most imaginative way possible on this hands-on and interactive day! See them dress up in our special scientific uniforms and select materials, tools and equipment to develop solutions – such as using their newfound knowledge of air pressure to design the furthest-flying rocket! Students will play a hand in the day as they question, plan and conduct their own scientific investigations. They’ll use our special tools to design their own products such as mystery matter slime, and will observe first-hand how contact forces affect the behaviour of objects, furthering their understanding of the ways in which energy is used as a resource in a fun and exciting way!

Syllabus Content Focus

Key inquiry questions answered

  • How can objects affect other objects with or without touching them?
  • How can we use forces and energy in a product or system?

Contact and non-contact forces
Students:

  • identify that both pushes and pulls can be classified as contact and non-contact forces(ACSSU076)
  • observe how contact and non-contact forces cause changes in the motion of objects, for example:(ACSSU076)
    • changes in speed
    • changes in direction

Forces and energy in products and systems
Students:

  • investigate how forces and materials interact in a product or system to perform a function(ACTDEK011)

Activities

Introduction: The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers followed by an interactive and engaging science presentation. Our presentation will finish with a huge EXPLOSION using liquid nitrogen to launch over 1000 ping pong balls into the air! Students will be chosen from the audience to participate in fun experiments in front of their peers which will have your students engaged and laughing for hours. Selected students will be invited to dress up in real science uniforms such as lab coats, goggles and gloves whilst we explore the everyday role of scientists and their importance in our community. Students will identify the different kinds of forces such as air pressure, magnetism, gravity and friction. Students also identify and observe that both pushes and pulls can be classified as contact and non-contact forces and how this changes the motion of objects as well as its function.
Note: In school hall or a large COLA area preferred.

Activity 1: Slime Bonanza – Students will LOVE getting their hands all dirty and slimy with this activity. Here students will be changing the shape of an object by applying a force to it such as squashing and stretching it. Students will get to stretch and punch the slime to compact it to identify the properties of forces. The best part= students get to take the slime home with them.
Note: Best run outside on a concrete or grass area. We will bring a hose to clean the area afterward. The slime is just cornflour and water so will wash off easily.

Activity 2: Launching Air Pressure Rockets – Students design and build their own rocket before launching their spacecraft into the sky using a specially-designed high-pressure industrial rocket launcher. Through friendly competition, students will monitor the highest rockets, learning how each shape and design affects movement. A unique, engaging and action-packed activity focusing on air pressure and its effects on everyday materials.
Note: Rocket building can be done inside. Best launched outside.

Activity 3: Billy Cart Championships – Students will race each other in teams with our custom-made billy carts. Students observe how objects with wheels move such as rolling. This fantastic experience will enable your students to learn how to conquer forces whilst working together in teams building their communication skills, balance and fitness.
Note: On a grassy area such as an oval. Can also be run in a school hall.

Activity 4: Soda Bag Explosions / Tug-o-War – Students learn about how forces such as air pressure can create an explosion. Students conduct an experiment where they create a gas which will explode soda water EVERYWHERE! This activity finishes with students competing in a friendly game of Tug’o’War where they explore push and pull forces and friction.
Note: Outdoor area with space for Tug of War. This space will get slightly wet with soda water.
