Forces Shape Earth’s Surface (Erosion Experience)

Stage 2
Science Excursion

This fun and engaging Stage 2 erosion adventure shows students how Earth’s landscapes are shaped and changed over time.

On a guided bush walk, students see how wind, water and living things slowly break down rocks, supported by Aboriginal Dreaming Stories and Torres Strait Islander Legends about how different landforms were created.

Bug catching and dip-net fishing help students spot how erosion affects habitats and living things. The highlight is a hands-on beach erosion activity where students use moving water to see how waves shift sand and reshape the coastline!

10:00am – 2:00pm (4 hours)

10:00am – 10:25am
Arrival, morning tea and a toilet break.

10:25am – 10:55am – Introduction
A fun and interactive introduction to how wind, water and natural forces change landforms over time. Students learn how rocks break down and how landscapes shift.

Students are then split into groups of approx. 35, each led by a Ranger, and rotate through the activities below.

10:55am – 11:30am — Bush Walk: Weathering & Landforms
Students explore rock types, soil, plants and landforms as they see real examples of weathering caused by wind, water and living things. It’s fun, interactive and an adventure!

11:30am – 12:00pm — Bug Catching
Students search for insects and tiny creatures while discovering how erosion and landscape changes affect where these animals live. It’s hands-on, exciting and full of fascinating finds!

12:00pm – 12:30pm — Lunch & Toilet Break

12:30pm – 1:10pm — Dip Net Fishing/ Hand Reel Fishing (Depending on location)

Students investigate ponds, creeks or coastal waters to see how moving water shapes the environment and shifts sand, mud and debris. It’s splashy, engaging and full of surprises!

1:10pm – 1:50pm — Coastline Builders
Students model how waves move sand, carve landforms and reshape the beach. They test barriers, build mini coastlines and watch erosion happen right before their eyes. It’s messy, scientific and super fun!

1:50pm — Wrap-Up & Final Bathroom Break

2:00pm — Departure: A final Ranger Jamie wave sends everyone off… usually followed by a chorus of “Do we really have to leave?”

Please note: Times may vary slightly on the day. This schedule is a guide only.
