We Offer ENRICHMENT, STEM & Enquiry-BASED LEARNING PROGRAMS

Light and Sound (2hr)

Stage 1
Science Incursion

On this 2-hour adventure, students explore the exciting world of light and sound through hands-on investigations.

The session begins with an experiment using portable torches to test how light travels, reflects, bends and gets absorbed by different materials. Students compare transparent, translucent, opaque and reflective objects and see how each one changes the path of light.

Next, students dive into sound with guitars and harmonicas, discovering how vibrations create sound and how different materials and actions change pitch and volume.

Finally, students build simple solar ovens, exploring how light can be captured and transformed into heat. It’s a bright, musical, and hands-on science session full of exciting discoveries!

2-Hour Program

Introduction (Approx. 40 mins)
A fun, hands-on session exploring how light and sound work, with simple demonstrations that get students thinking, observing and testing.

A hall or undercover COLA works best.

Students are then divided into groups of approximately 35, each with their own Ranger. Groups rotate through the following activities:

Activity 1: Solar Ovens + Portable Torches (Approx. 40 mins)
Students experiment with light using torches and shadows, then build simple solar ovens to explore how light can warm different materials.

Activity 2: Guitars + Harmonicas (Approx. 40 mins)
Students explore sound and vibrations as they play guitars and harmonicas, testing how different actions change pitch and volume. Best done indoors!

Wrap-Up & Goodbye
A warm farewell from our Rangers!

Please note this schedule is a guide and may vary slightly on the day.

ST1-SCI-01 measures and describes changes in living things, materials, movement, Earth and the sky;
ST1-PQU-01 poses questions based on observations and information to investigate cause and effect;
ST1-DAT-01 collects, represents and uses data to identify patterns and relationships;
ST1-DDT-01 uses technologies and materials to design and make products to address user needs or opportunities;
ST1-PQU-01 poses questions based on observations and information to investigate cause and effect.

Light and sound interact with materials in different ways

  • Recognise that light and sound can travel through air, water and some solids and are affected by those materials;
  • Pose questions, test and describe how light can be reflected, refracted, dispersed or absorbed by materials;
  • Describe how translucent, transparent, opaque and reflective materials interact with light;
  • Recognise that sound is created and carried by vibrations;
  • Observe how Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples use a range of materials and actions to create sound for specific purposes;
  • Test how different materials and actions affect the volume and pitch of sound;

The cost of this science-fuelled adventure is $990 + GST flat rate.

We recommend one session for up to 60 students. If you have more students, we suggest booking an additional session so everyone gets the best experience.

This price includes:

  • A pre-completed Risk Assessment to make planning easy;
  • Full administrative support from our team;
  • All materials and equipment provided, you bring the kids, we’ll bring… well, everything else;

We provide all equipment and materials, so you just bring the students. To keep everything running smoothly, please check the day outline for the recommended spaces.

Do all of your Staff hold a WWCC?

Absolutely. Every Ranger has a valid Working With Children Check and all required training.
We can show ID and credentials upon signing in at your school.

If you’d like staff details in advance, just let us know. We finalise our rosters about a week ahead and can provide this information then.

What time will the Rangers arrive?

Our Rangers arrive approximately 45 minutes before your start time so they can sign in, set up, and get everything adventure-ready.
