Object Materials and How They Move!

Early Stage 1
Science Excursion

On this exciting outdoor excursion, students dive into a hands-on science adventure! The day begins with our captivating Liquid Nitrogen Show, where brave volunteers suit up in PPE and help demonstrate how different materials freeze, react and move.

Then the fun continues, whether we’re at the beach or in a local park. Students explore how materials bend, stretch, and twist as they create slime, engineer air rockets that blast sky-high, and test how different materials affect speed while racing our action-packed billycarts. Our Human Movement Game gets students identifying body parts used for movement and experimenting with how shape and force affect motion.

Students also learn how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples select natural materials based on their properties.

It’s supercharged science adventure filled with big reactions and even bigger smiles!

10:00am – 2:00pm (4 hours)

Arrival at 10:00am

10:00am – 10:25am
Arrival, morning tea and a toilet break so everyone can refuel, reset, and remember where their hats ended up.

10:25am – 10:55am
A wildly entertaining science show featuring liquid nitrogen, PPE dress-ups and movement challenges that get students thinking, predicting and laughing as they watch materials freeze, crack and behave in surprising ways. Students are then split into groups of approx. 35, each led by a Ranger, and rotate through the activities below.

10:55am – 11:30am — Slime Crafting
Students whip up oozy oobleck and investigate how this strange material can squish, stretch and move!

11:30am – 12:00pm — Air Rocket Building
Students build their very own rockets and send them skyward, discovering how objects fly, zoom and spin.

12:00pm – 12:30pm — Lunch & Toilet Break

12:30pm – 1:10pm — Human Body Movement Game
Students sprint, wiggle, and zoom through challenges that reveal how bodies move (and how competitive their teachers secretly are).

1:10pm – 1:50pm — Billycart Championship
Students twist and zoom through the billycart course, observing how shape, force and surface affect how an object moves.

1:50pm — Wrap-Up & Final Bathroom Break

2:00pm — Departure: A big Ranger Jamie wave goodbye… and maybe a few “Can we come back tomorrow?” comments.

Please note: Times may vary slightly on the day. This schedule is a guide only.

Objects are made of materials that have observable properties

  • Recognise that properties of materials can be observed using the senses;
  • Observe and manipulate materials to describe their properties using Tier 2 vocabulary;
  • Pose questions about materials and describe how they are used in everyday objects;
  • Bend, twist, crush and stretch objects to show that the properties of materials remain the same;
  • Explore how Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples use natural materials for specific purposes based on their properties.

Objects move in different ways

  • Observe, describe and categorise the ways in which objects move;
  • Identify and label the parts of the human body that are used for movement;
  • Test how the movement of an object is affected by its shape;
  • Experiment to observe how an object’s movement is affected by its material;
  • Identify objects made by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples and describe their movements.
