About Object Movement - Physical World

The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers before enjoying an interactive and engaging science presentation. In this practical and interactive STEM based program, students investigate the physical characteristics of objects and how they move such as bouncing, flying, jumping, rolling and sliding. Selected students will be invited up to dress in real science uniforms such as lab coats, goggles and gloves whilst we explore the everyday role of scientists and their importance in our community. Students will laugh and cheer as they watch this engaging presentation all whilst learning about objects and how they move.

Movement of objects
Students:

  • observe the way a variety of familiar objects move, for example: (ACSSU005)
    • sliding
    • rolling
    • spinning
    • bouncing
  • observe the effects of push and pull forces on familiar objects, for example: (ACSSU033)
    • changes in motion, eg starting, stopping, changing speed or direction
    • changes in shape, eg stretching, breaking
  • participate in guided investigations to explore how particular objects move on land, water and/or in the air, and how these objects are affected by forces (ACTDEK002)

Introductory Presentation The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers before enjoying an interactive and engaging presentation.
(approx. 25 minutes)
Grouping: Students are divided into their groups of approximately x 30 students and are allocated a Ranger guide for each activity.
Activity 1 Students partake in each activity for approximately 30 minutes.
Activity 2 Students partake in each activity for approximately 30 minutes.
Lunch / Toilet Break
(approx. 25 minutes)
Activity 3 Students partake in each activity for approximately 30 minutes.
Activity 4 Students partake in each activity for approximately 30 minutes.
Wrap Up / Conclusion / Toilet Break

Activities

INTRODUCTION: (In Hall)
The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers before enjoying an interactive and engaging science presentation. Students will laugh and cheer as they watch this engaging presentation all whilst learning about objects and how they move.

ACTIVITY 1: Slime Bonanza
Students will LOVE getting their hands all dirty and slimy with this activity. Here students will be changing the shape of an object by applying a force to it such as squashing and stretching it. Students will be stretching the slime, and punching it to compact the slime to identify the properties of forces. The best part= students get to take the slime home with them.

ACTIVITY 2: Launching Air Pressure Rockets 
Ever dreamed of launching a rocket so far up into the atmosphere you couldn’t see it? Focusing on ‘flying’ we bring the fun to you! Students design and build their very own rocket before launching their spacecraft into the sky above the rooftops using a specially designed high pressure industrial rocket launcher. Guaranteed to get the adrenaline pumping, students will watch in awe as they witness their rockets roar into the sky. Through championship competitions with their friends, students will monitor the highest rockets, learning how each shape and design affects movement. A unique, engaging and action-packed activity focusing on pressure and its effects on everyday materials.
