About

In this practical and interactive STEM based program, students investigate the physical characteristics of objects and how they move, and then observe objects in movement in real-life, outdoor contexts. Students examine firsthand how push and pull forces create movement whilst exploring the fundamental concepts of force and motion using billycarts and an array of supplied resources. This incursion will be sure to excite your students with an engaging, fun and fast paced day packed with exciting games and activities they will never forget!

Movement of objects
Students:

  • observe the way a variety of familiar objects move, for example: (ACSSU005)
    • sliding
    • rolling
    • spinning
    • bouncing
  • observe the effects of push and pull forces on familiar objects, for example: (ACSSU033)
    • changes in motion, eg starting, stopping, changing speed or direction
    • changes in shape, eg stretching, breaking
  • participate in guided investigations to explore how particular objects move on land, water and/or in the air, and how these objects are affected by forces (ACTDEK002)

Day Outline

Rangers arrive at your school for approx. 8:30am for set up.
Incursion duration 9:30am- 2:30pm
Introductory Presentation The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers before enjoying an interactive and engaging presentation.
(approx. 30-40 minutes)
Grouping: Students are divided into their groups of approximately x 30 students and are allocated a Ranger guide for each activity. Each activity is in on a rotational basis.
Activity 1 Students participate in each activity for approximately 40 minutes.
Activity 2 Students participate in each activity for approximately 40 minutes.
Activity 3 Students participate in each activity for approximately 40 minutes.
Activity 4 Students participate in each activity for approximately 40 minutes.
School scheduled break times (lunch and recess) remain as usual.

Activities

INTRODUCTION
The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers before enjoying an interactive and engaging science presentation. In this practical and interactive STEM based program, students investigate the physical characteristics of objects and how they move such as bouncing, flying, jumping, rolling and sliding. Selected students will be invited up to dress in real science uniforms such as lab coats, goggles and gloves whilst we explore the everyday role of scientists and their importance in our community. Students will laugh and cheer as they watch this engaging presentation all whilst learning about objects and how they move.

ACTIVITY 1: Billy Cart Championship
Students in teams will be racing against each other on a race course with our custom-made billy carts. Students observe how objects with wheels move such as rolling. This fantastic experience will enable your students to learn how to conquer forces whilst working together in teams building their communication skills, balance and fitness

ACTIVITY 2: Slime Bonanza
Students will LOVE getting their hands all dirty and slimy with this activity. Here students will be changing the shape of an object by applying a force to it such as squashing and stretching it. Students will be stretching the slime, and punching it to compact the slime to identify the properties of forces. The best part is students get to take the slime home with them.

ACTIVITY 3: Launching Air Pressure Rockets
Ever dreamed of launching a rocket so far up into the atmosphere you couldn’t see it? Focusing on ‘flying’ we bring the fun to you! Students design and build their very own rocket before launching their spacecraft into the sky above the rooftops using a specially designed high pressure industrial rocket launcher. Guaranteed to get the adrenaline pumping, students will watch in awe as they witness their rockets soar into the sky. Through championship competitions with their friends, students will monitor the highest rockets, learning how each shape and design affects movement. A unique, engaging and action-packed activity focusing on pressure and its effects on everyday materials.

ACTIVITY 4: Object Movement Olympics
Students are split in two teams working together to race each other in a competitive game against the clock. This highly competitive competition will have your students shouting, screaming and cheering with their peers as the teams discuss strategies and tactics on how to beat their competitors. Students discuss the answers and problem solve the questions based around what they learnt in the morning introduction presentation.
