HSIE Excursion
Get ready for your students to step into the roles of geographers as they explore the coastal town of Bundeena, using maps, satellite images, and hands-on fieldwork to investigate how places across Australia are organised and connected.
Through engaging real-world activities, students examine how people, organisations, and agencies manage places and protect environments, particularly in response to environmental change. The program concludes with students designing practical strategies to care for local places, building critical thinking, environmental responsibility, and confidence.

Please find our day outline as follows:
10am- 2pm (4 hour)
Introduction & Liveability Survey: Students step into the role of geographers, assessing what makes Bundeena a liveable place for residents, visitors, and wildlife.
Beach Habitat & Environmental Impact Activity: Through hands-on exploration, students investigate coastal habitats and discuss how local communities can protect environments for animals, while examining the impacts of development and environmental events.
Guided Coastal Walk to Bonnie Vale: A short, scenic walk where students observe, measure, collect, and record geographical data using authentic fieldwork techniques.
Lunch is enjoyed by the seaside, with access to ample amenities.
Bug Catching & Biodiversity Investigation: Students explore biodiversity within a national park environment and compare their findings to more urbanised areas, deepening their understanding of environmental management strategies.

HS3-ACH-01 describes Aboriginal Knowledges and Practices that care for Country and the importance of Aboriginal Languages revival;
HS3-GEO-01 examines global citizenship and how people organise, protect and sustainably use the environment, using geographical information;
HS3-HIS-01 examines and describes the development of Australian colonies and Australia as a nation, using sources as evidence;
HS3-DEM-01 describes the origins and features of Australia’s democratic system of government and laws;
HS3-CWT-01 creates written texts to communicate ideas and understanding about people, places and events of the past and the present.

- Locate and represent cities, towns and communities in relation to other places in Australia, using road maps
- Explain how urban, rural and remote places in Australia are connected, using satellite images and freight maps
- Describe ways in which cities and towns in Australia are organised, using oblique and vertical aerial images
- Observe, measure, collect and record geographical information to explain how places are organised
- Research and explain how people and agencies manage places where environmental events occur
- Propose strategies to manage a local place where environmental events occur
- Explain how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities use seasonal calendars to organise and manage Country and Place

Bus Drop Off Location: 10am in bus bay on Cnr of Loftus St and Brighton St (next to Bundeena Ferry Wharf)
Bus Pick Up Location: 2pm at Sea Breeze Lane Bonnie Vale, in Bonnie Vale Picnic Ground
The cost of this exciting adventure is $24.00 + GST per student.

Please note: The Tramway Museum is available for excursions on Wednesdays only. This is a tentative booking. After your booking request is submitted, we will be in touch via email to confirm the requested date and arrange the final details for the booking.Â
All prices are +GST. As this program is an educational service, all GST charged can be reimbursed in its entirety by the Government.
FAQS
How many teachers/helpers do I need on my excursion?
The more grown-up sidekicks, the better! We recommend at least one teacher/parent helper per class. No extra cost for teachers or parent helpers on this program.
What equipment/ materials do we need to bring?
Students should bring morning tea, lunch, water bottles, and any required medication. We suggest sports uniforms and comfortable shoes. We supply all the materials and equipment needed for your day.

We’re flexible and happy to arrange an incursion alternative or, where needed, postpone your program.
How many groups will my students be in?
We usually plan for one Ranger per 35-40 students. On the day, your students will be split into groups of that size, with a Ranger assigned to each group to guide them as they rotate through the activities.
