About

Fill a day with STEM-based fun with this action-packed, hands on incursion! The day starts with an engaging presentation by our enthusiastic Rangers, ending with a BANG as we use liquid nitrogen to launch 1000 ping pong balls into the air in a giant explosion! With a variety of props on hand, elected students will get to dress up in science lab coats, goggles and gloves and apply their movement skills to demonstrate effects of push and pull forces. The whole class will see forces and energy in action with flying balloons, floating bubbles, and more. They’ll use our specially made products, tools and equipment to explore how technology can be used with forces, and be tasked with solving movement challenges. Students will design their own rockets which use air pressure to soar across the school grounds, or make non-Newtonian slime. Our activities will challenge them to come up with alternative solutions to problems, and they’ll gain an understanding of the purpose of different forces. Students will examine firsthand how different applications of strength or different types of energy can create change in the motion of objects. Students will be able to witness and discuss the simple ways they use push and pull forces in everyday life, allowing them to further develop their understanding of forces and energy and how they can be used for specific purposes in products.

Activities

Introduction: The day kicks off with a meet and greet with our enthusiastic Rangers followed by an interactive and engaging science presentation, finishing with a huge EXPLOSION using liquid nitrogen and over 1000 ping pong balls launching into the air! Students will be chosen from the audience to participate in fun experiments in front of their peers which will have the whole class engaged and laughing for hours. Selected students will be invited up to dress in real science uniforms such as lab coats, goggles and gloves whilst we explore the everyday role of scientists and their importance in our community. Students investigate how forces and energy are used in products as well as describe the effects of push and pulls on objects they encounter.
Note: In school hall or a large COLA area preferred.

Activity 1: Slime Bonanza – Students will LOVE getting their hands all dirty and slimy with this activity. Here students will be changing the shape of an object by applying a force to it such as squashing and stretching it. Students will get to stretch and punch the slime to compact it to identify the properties of forces. The best part= students get to take the slime home with them.
Note: Best run outside on a concrete or grass area. We will bring a hose to clean the area afterward. The slime is just cornflour and water so will wash off easily.

Activity 2: Launching Air Pressure Rockets – Students design and build their own rocket before launching their spacecraft into the sky using a specially-designed high-pressure industrial rocket launcher. Through friendly competition, students will monitor the highest rockets, learning how each shape and design affects movement. A unique, engaging and action-packed activity focusing on air pressure and its effects on everyday materials.
Note: Rocket building can be done inside. Best launched outside.

Activity 3: Billy Cart Championships – Students will race each other in teams with our custom-made billy carts. Students observe how objects with wheels move such as rolling. This fantastic experience will enable your students to learn how to conquer forces whilst working together in teams building their communication skills, balance and fitness.
Note: On a grassy area such as an oval. Can also be run in a school hall.

Activity 4: Soda Bag Explosions / Tug-o-War – Students learn about how forces such as air pressure can create an explosion. Students conduct an experiment where they create a gas which will explode soda water EVERYWHERE! This activity finishes with students competing in a friendly game of Tug’o’War where they explore push and pull forces and friction.
Note: Outdoor area with space for Tug of War. This space will get slightly wet with soda water.
