About
Nestled in North Wollongong, Puckey’s Estate is a rare and stunning coastal habitat featuring a unique blend of rainforest, dunes, and marshlands. Our hands-on Environmental Change and Management excursion invites participants to investigate the delicate balance between diverse environments and the impact of human activity on sustainability.
Activities include fieldwork using tools such as quadrats, dip nets, and maps. From dip net fishing to analysing the quality of freshwater flowing into the ocean, this unforgettable adventure inspires learning in nature’s classroom

Participants will receive an overview of the day and engage in a mapping activity in their booklets to familiarise themselves with Kurnell Beach and it’s history. |

Sand Dune Transect: In this activity, students will conduct a sand dune transect, examining vegetation and soil to understand the impacts of environmental change. |

Crab Catching: Students will explore the intertidal zone in an exciting crab-catching activity, learning about local marine life and its ecological significance. |

Activities
Guided Walk: Students will embark on a guided walk through Puckey’s Estate, traversing a 1.5 km network of boardwalks and informal paths. Along the way, students will observe and discuss the interplay of natural ecosystems, such as rainforest, dunes, and marshlands, and analyse the impacts of human activity on these environments.
Sand Dune Transect: The sand dune transect activity directly relates to the syllabus by allowing students to investigate coastal ecosystems and the effects of environmental change on biodiversity. By analysing vegetation patterns and soil characteristics, students develop a deeper understanding of sustainable management practices necessary for preserving these fragile environments.
Biodiversity Survey & Quadrats: Using quadrats, students will conduct a biodiversity survey to identify and record various plant and animal species, fostering a deeper understanding of ecological interactions and the importance of conserving local habitats.
Dip-Net Fishing: In the dip-net fishing activity, students will collect and observe aquatic life, allowing them to explore the intricacies of marine ecosystems and understand the role of healthy waterways in supporting biodiversity.
