Set in the stunning Wattamolla within the Royal National Park, this hands-on excursion encourages students to explore the interplay of diverse environments and the effects of human-induced changes on sustainability.

Once used for cattle grazing during European settlement, this transformed National Park serves as a compelling case study. Through interactive activities, students will analyse the causes and consequences of environmental change and examine sustainable management practices.

Throughout this engaging ‘Environmental Change and Management’ experience, students will participate in hands-on fieldwork using tools like quadrats, dip nets, and maps. From dip net fishing to assessing the quality of fresh water flowing into the ocean, your students will enjoy this unforgettable adventure in nature!

Gather together for an engaging introduction with our enthusiastic rangers, who will share exciting insights about the day’s activities.
Students split into groups of 30-35 students to rotate through activities

10:40am – 11:20am
Dive into your first hands-on activity, where students will explore and engage with the environment in a fun and interactive way.
Activity
11:20am – 12:00pm
Continue the excitement with your second rotation, uncovering more about the unique ecosystems of Wattamolla.
12:00pm – 12:30pm
Recharge with lunch, sharing experiences from the morning with friends.

12:30pm – 1:10pm
Jump into your third activity, where students will further deepen their understanding of the environment.

Conclude the rotations with your final activity, wrapping up your adventure with exciting discoveries.

Activities

Water Quality pH Testing: In our pH testing activity, students will analyse water samples to assess the health of local ecosystems, gaining firsthand experience in environmental monitoring and understanding how water quality affects biodiversity.

Bush Walk: During the bush walk, students will engage in a guided exploration of Wattamolla’s diverse landscapes, answering questions about the unique flora and fauna while discussing the importance of sustainable management in preserving these environments.

Biodiversity Survey & Quadrats: Using quadrats, students will conduct a biodiversity survey to identify and record various plant and animal species, fostering a deeper understanding of ecological interactions and the importance of conserving local habitats.

Dip-Net Fishing: In the dip-net fishing activity, students will collect and observe aquatic life, allowing them to explore the intricacies of marine ecosystems and understand the role of healthy waterways in supporting biodiversity.
