Activities

Introduction
Students will begin the day with a fun and interactive presentation by our enthusiastic Rangers. Rangers will ask the students various open-ended questions about Australian environments and how they support and provide for humans. These questions get the students thinking about the importance of these ecosystems and ways that we can manage and protect them.

Activity 1: Ranger Jamie Harbour Adventure
Students will board a private charter from Circular Quay to begin a fun, sight-filled charter across Sydney Harbour. Students will observe various habitats around the harbour, while our rangers will provide syllabus-related information over the boat’s speakers. Rangers will point out various harbour features and how this affects how the area is used. Rangers will ask students about the various ways in which we can interact with the harbour environments, including how we have changed the area and ways we continue to alter the environment.

Activity 2: Beach Habitat
Students work together in small teams to create an animal home for penguins, crabs, sea birds and other animals that live in this environment. Students will have their creative side sparked in this activity. Each group will be given cardboard boxes and tasked with collecting sticks, sand, stones and shells to make specific animal homes. This activity focuses on the destructive human influence on the environment and why we must protect beach habitats for different species. Students work together in groups and their creative side will be sparked as they create an elaborate animal dwelling/ habitat.

Activity 3: Hand-reel Fishing
Students will use hand reels with bait to catch fish and other water-dwelling critters and examine the different species that live in the local environment. They’ll take samples, catch critters from different areas and use scientific tools and equipment to determine whether an environment is healthy or unhealthy.

Activity 4: Scenic Sydney Harbour Tour
On the return trip back to Circular Quay, students will have the opportunity to have their lunch while taking in the picturesque views of the harbour. Rangers will also recap what the students have learned and seen throughout the day, making sure to relate it to what they have been learning in their classrooms.
